Coaches Begin Using a Starting Twelve After ChatGPT Hallucinates During Tactical Advice

“Sounds legit.”

SEATTLE – The football world’s virtual prayers have been answered, as the game enters a brave new era of tactical innovation following reports that coaches are now turning to artificial intelligence for strategic inspiration, with mixed results.

Seattle Reign head coach Laura Harvey recently revealed she had consulted ChatGPT for tactical advice during the NWSL season. The AI, renowned for its calm logic and complete lack of real-world experience, reportedly recommended switching to a back five. Harvey, a professional coach with over a decade of experience, agreed.

The Reign went on to lose and, according to insiders, “looked kind of more structured but also a bit bland and soulless.”

Now, following the viral revelation, coaches worldwide are taking the experiment further. One WSL assistant allegedly asked ChatGPT how to “stop conceding from set pieces.” The bot, famous for its hallucinations, suggested “two goalkeepers.”

AI analysts have warned that relying on large language models for tactics should be approached with caution and may lead to unusual outcomes, including bizarre formations, strange selections, and decreased critical thinking.

Harvey, however, remains optimistic. “Look,” she told reporters, “the AI’s got access to Pep, Klopp, and Reddit. That’s more than most of my assistants.”

Rumours suggest some managers have already tested the next frontier: asking ChatGPT for motivational speeches. One unlucky Scottish manager reportedly received a 1,200-word monologue beginning with “Absolutely, I can help with that. First, let us consider your squad’s emotional alignment…” and ending with “Would you like me to give you 2–3 alternate endings for maximum emotional impact?”

Meanwhile, ChatGPT itself has been unavailable for comment, reportedly busy generating a tactical blueprint for the 2030 World Cup final and adding em dashes to the hundreds of hyphenated surnames that now litter the football world.
